The FAQ & shout-out edition.

The FAQ & shout-out edition.

Brace yourselves…. In LESS THAN FIVE WEEKS we will finally be taking on the challenge of a lifetime – cycling c.1000 miles from Lands End to John O Groats. As if we haven’t been talking about it enough, people still occasionally ask us what “lejog” means (Is it French? Something to do with jogging?) so with such little time to go we have decided to try and talk about it even more. This blog will cover the most popular FAQs we are facing on a day-to-day basis and give the first of many well-earned shout-outs….

CAN ABBIE RIDE A BIKE YET?

Abbie has recently become very proficient on spinning bikes. A regular at TurnFit in Guildford – give Abs a stationery two-wheeler and she could cycle the circumference of the globe. Joking aside, training is well-underway with Abbie smashing both spin classes and the Surrey hills, and Sal just about managing a casual 70 mile jaunt to Windsor and back on Sunday. Next are a few long rides over Easter and the pinnacle of our training – 83 miles on both Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th April in the New Forest Spring Sportive. Shout-out number one goes to those hoping to join us on one of the days (from Team Ignition: showing they can keep more than the wheels of the legal world turning, that’s Dave, Mike and Lizzy – and handy in a medical crisis but knows how to say no to a dodgy inhaler request: Dr Michael Brown).

Another shout-out to remote coach Matt who is always checking in on how we’re coping with training in the snow* (*around the same time we took up spinning) from a sun-lounger in the Dubai desert with endless words of encouragement and support – thanks Matt!

HAVE YOU GOT ALL YOUR KIT?

If, by ‘all’ you mean ‘some’ or ‘a bit of’ then – yes – we are pretty much good to go. In true Johnston form – there are lists galore and a huge amount of research has been undertaken, even if not all the purchasing has quite happened yet.

Shout-out time to one of our longest-standing mates and architect-turned-cycling entrepreneur Stefan from Pannier who is advising us on bikepacking kit, helping to ensure Jason and Kylie become stylish and evenly balanced pack-horses for the support-free days.

Another shout-out to Team Ignition who have sponsored SS18’s most sought-after garment – the “Strong for Strong” jersey. See pics below and let us know if you’d like to order one ASAP!

CAN YOU DEAL WITH A PUNCTURE?

We are very familiar with the theory behind how punctures occur and how one might go about fixing them if they were so inclined. Abbie even gave it a go once when James got a puncture recently… but managed to puncture the new inner tube while attempting the change. Anyway – we know lots of people who have both experienced and changed punctures. We’ll be absolutely fine!

HAVE YOU SORTED ALL YOUR ACCOMMODATION?

YES! The first shout-out in this category goes to the wonderful Dlaboha-Morrisons for letting us stay in their Cornwall abode the night before the start (Ian, Lydia, Martha, Theo plus the one and only Larysa). In addition, Abbie has spent hours finding the finest Premier Inn’s and bike-friendly airbnbs across the land – if you want to spend a night with us on the road and are wondering where we might be, please let us know.

In addition, we have booked an airbnb fit for the post-LEJOG party in Inverness for Friday 11th and Saturday 12th May and are expecting lots of you for the Saturday night celebration (shout out alert for those already signed-up to the Inverness partygoer list: James, Lorraine, David, Jane, Fi, Al, Susan, Steve, Ness, Jonny, Larysa, Tara, Charles, Katie, Joe, Phil, Ed…). Extra kudos (Strava joke – you’re welcome) to you all in advance for manning the BBQ and bringing us cocktails whilst we recline on some deckchairs and talk about that time we cycled c.1000 miles….

WILL YOU HAVE A SUPPORT CREW / CYCLING BUDDIES?

To remind you of where we are heading and when we will have support / mates, please see one of many LEJOG tables extracted from one of many LEJOG spreadsheets…. HUGE shout-outs to everyone below – we can’t wait to share some of our LEJOG experience with you! (Best viewed on a laptop)

WHO IS LOOKING AFTER MEG THE DOG?

Good question. If you’ve ever wondered what looking after an overly-friendly Wheaten Terrier puppy is like and are keen to find out for any of the dates above then please let Abbie know! Meg’s love of bike wheels and herding cyclists means she’s counted herself out of this adventure.

HOW CAN WE DONATE MONEY?

We’d love you to donate money – please just hold onto your purse-strings for a little longer whilst we finalise our next charitable push and decide whether to broaden our fundraising efforts now that we’ve made an incredible £4k for the Marsden sarcoma fund!  This fantastic achievement was made all the more possible by our final shout out of this blog – Becky Arnold – who tipped us over the £4k mark with sponsorship for a half-marathon she ran last weekend. Well done Becky!

ARE YOU EXCITED?

We are SO excited!

Lots of love, Abs & Sal xxx

  1. Well done you two – so proud of you both!

Meg – Of course I will help where I can which is only the first and middle weekend. It could be dodgy with old Charlie but we will manage if there is not a better alternative. I would have to hand over to other minders on a Monday as I work Tue, Wed & Thursday.
